HOUSE OF CLITTER
a one-name family study of the surnames of 'Clitter' and 'Cleeter'

Uffcott, Broad Hinton, Wiltshire, England

ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME CLEETER

The Cleeter surname, definitely a variant spelling of Clitter, was initially used by first or second generation descendants of Christopher and Robert Clitter, born in the mid-1400s. Probably brothers, these two Clitters are referenced in the letters of Henry VIII (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=91135) published in 1523. The Cleeter spelling of Clitter could have resulted from a local pronunciation of the Clitter surname from these descendants who first lived in the village of Uffcott, Wiltshire, England.
